The Hoge Veluwe National Park owes its varied windswept landscape to the ebbing years of the Ice Age, when alternating sand dunes crept up its vast surface. Located a few kilometers away from the city of Arnhem, this stellar national park is famous as one of Netherlands' largest unbroken natural reserves. Its seemingly unbridled expanses unfurl over an expanse of 55 kilometers (34.17 miles), harboring jagged peaks of glacial moraines, sand dunes, heathlands and dense woodlands. The park is home to a vibrant diversity of fauna and flora, from Sardinian wild sheep and roe deer, to lichen-laced stretches and deciduous forests. On clear summer days, the depths of the forest are filled with melodious birdsong, representing a diverse flock of birds such as woodpeckers, magpies, jays and marigold finches that nestle in its verdant corners. The park is also home to a historic hunting lodge and the Kröller-Müller Museum. Visitors can traverse the park by hiking or biking along its winding trails.
