TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Dunedin Railway Station is a magnificent heritage structure and the pride of Dunedin. Constructed in 1906 by famous architect Sir George Alexander Troup, it is a flamboyant example of Flemish Renaissance architecture. Its façade is formed from light-tinged Oamaru stone set against dark basalt rock, thus rendering the structure a beautiful contrast. The highlight is the ticket booking hall where as many as 750,000 tiles create a mosaic on the floor. The station's main platform is one of the longest in New Zealand at a length of 500 meters (1640 feet), while a grand clock tower rises to a height of 37 meters (121 feet) on the south side. For decades, Dunedin Railway Station featured as a prominent tourist site but it is also an operational station connecting Dunedin to major tourist attractions.
