Brazil's sixth largest city, Belo Horizonte spans over 330.9 square kilometers (127.42 square miles). It is nestled in Minas Gerais' southern region and is a conglomeration of classical-style structures, modernist masterpieces, expansive complexes and blissful urban parks. The city was founded in the year 1701 by famed explorer Jao Leite da Silva Ortiz, who earned a fortune here by exploiting its rich reserves of gold. Known for its greenery, the existence of Praca de Liberdade, Parque Municipal Americo Renne Giannetti, and Parque Guanabara quite literally breathes some fresh air into Belo Horizonte's otherwise urban landscapes. The Mineirao is arguably the city's most iconic tourist attraction.
