TOURIST ATTRACTIONS & SIGHTSEEING, PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Named after the mineral that was mined by Native Americans in the area, Galena was known for its mineral rush in the country. It is now a tourist attraction for its architecture and history. The Galena Historic District has more than 1,000 homes that are made of distinct red bricks ranging from the styles of the Greek Revival and Italianate, to the Gothic Revival and later Victorian styles. The Ulysses S. Grant Home, the former home of the 18th President, is considered as a National Historic Landmark and is now a famous memorial. Visitors can enjoy several activities here such as horse riding, fishing and winter recreational sports.
