Leonard Slatkin is an conductor and composer from Los Angeles whose long career has helped establish him as one of the more respected conductors of his generation. Born to a violinist and conductor father who founded the Hollywood String Quartet and a cellist mother, Slatkin was raised in an environment that helped stoke a passion for musical understanding. Starting his conducting debut in 1966, when he became the artistic director and conductor of the New York Youth Symphony, Slatkin has since managed to distinguish himself by leading several prominent ensembles including the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony as well as the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C.
