Taking the increasingly popular route of holing up in an isolated barn until a perfectly rural album is written and recorded, Fort Frances shipped off to Maine to record its debut album in 2010. After becoming satisfied with their work, the three members returned to their hometown of Chicago and released The Atlas in 2011 to rave reviews. Initially formed as a solo project for singer/songwriter David McMillin, Fort Frances eventually absorbed two more musicians and honed its sound into a strikingly sparse blend of traditional Americana and string-laden chamber pop that has gone over well with a variety of audiences.
