When four girls studying stringed instruments at the Reykjavik College of Music in the late 90s decided to form a band, the group Amiina was conceived. At first, the ensemble's tunes were classical in nature, but after incorporating elements of modern rock music, the band started to make songs that can be described as baroque pop. Because of its fine attention to detail, the group was asked by fellow Icelandic troupe Sigur Ros to accompany them on tour and ever since, the two groups have collaborated; this partnership has warranted some extremely interesting results. When not working with Sigur Ros, the group takes on auxiliary musicians (including a percussionist) to create ornate music that's mellow, intelligent and easy to listen to.
