Marc-André Hamelin is a French-Canadian pianist and composer whose fame lies primarily in his interpretations of the world's most obscure and/or notoriously difficult works for piano. Hamelin's recordings of piano works by Leopold Godowsky and Charles Alkan for the Hyperion label have earned numerous awards for the pianist due to his interpretive command over music that had previously been too challenging for most pianists to pull off convincingly. Hamelin's repertoire is one of the most extensive in the world, with an almost complete command of the standard piano repertoire, on top of a huge number of works by lesser-known composers who may not have had an audience prior. Hamelin is also a composer in his own right, with a recording of his 12 Etudes being nominated for numerous awards in 2010.
