Each of Berlin's 23 districts has its own particular reputation. Neukölln is widely perceived to be a humble working-class district distinctly lacking in culture. Establishments like the Neuköllner Oper (Neukölln Opera) or the Werkstatt der Kulturen (Cultural Workshop) however, disprove this preconception. The centrepiece of Neukölln's cultural scene is the cultural festival known as '48 Stunden Neukölln' ('48 hours in Neukölln'). In over 30 locations, local and international artists present music, opera, theatre, dance, workshops and experimental performances. The event is centred around Karl-Marx-Straße, which is closed to vehicles during the festival.
