Carnival season begins on New Year's Day with the crowning of the Carnival Prince and Princess in the Stadthalle. Between now and Ash Wednesday, over 300 festive events take place, such as the storming of the town hall and invasion of Karlplatz by the women of Dusseldorf! The highlight of the Carnival is on Rosenmontag (the Monday before Ash Wednesday) when 60 different carnival societies, all dressed in costume, parade through the city. The ensuing party lasts for three days and three nights, culminating with the burning of the Hoppeditz on Ash Wednesday.
