Founded in the late 1960s in Surrey, England, Genesis is a band has had two distinct phases, both of which earned them fame: the prog rock heavy Peter Gabriel era full of concept albums and lengthy, theatrical songs, and the better known Phil Collins era full of straightforward pop with melodic hooks. When Gabriel left the band in 1976 to pursue a solo career many fans of the band pondered the possibility of the band breaking up, but Collins quickly stepped into the shoes of lead singer and provided excellent vocals for several albums - garnering the band more fame than when Gabriel was at the forefront of the group. Once Collins left the band, Genesis struggled to replace him and eventually disbanded, only recently reforming for reunion tours.
