The Waterboys is a Celtic folk/rock band from Edinburgh, Scotland that has been one of the genre's most iconic and influential acts since forming in 1983. Comprised of musicians hailing from areas throughout the UK and the US, The Waterboys was one of the first bands to successfully fuse Celtic folk music with rock and roll to create a mainstream sound that became an immediate hit in the early 1980s. Despite going on hiatus for much of the 1990s, The Waterboys reunited in 2000 and continues to contribute to the evolution of the folk-rock genre and the many, now popular folk rock bands that cite them as their primary influence.
