Nelson Freire is a Brazilian concert pianist whose first public performance was of Mozart's Piano Sonata in A-major, K. 331 at the age of five. Following Freire's youthful debut, he would then go on to place 7th at the Rio de Janeiro International Piano Competition at the age of 12, virtually ensuring international fame for the young pianist as a result. As an adult, Freire has performed with some of the world's most respected conductors and orchestras as well as in recital as a solo pianist at prestigious venues throughout the world. Freire frequently joins friend and fellow South American pianist, Martha Argerich for performances as a piano duo--performances which are considered to be some of the best piano duo performances ever recorded. His solo recordings have also garnered major critical acclaim on top of several awards, particularly his recordings of Frederick Chopin's piano works for the Decca music label.
